Formed directly after Sink split up, Big Ray, initially consisted of the same personnel:

John Ruscoe - Guitar, Vocals
Paul Duncan (2) - Bass
Kermack - Drums

The first album, Naked, was an acoustic record made by a punk band (even if they did have a brand new name) and it was always going to be a big jump for any Sink fans to make. New label boss, Christof Ellinghaus, from Berlin-based City Slang Records, suggested that the band give full reign to their country/folk leanings and make an acoustic record along the lines of label mates Yo La Tengo's recently released Fakebook album. The formula worked well for YLT, but Naked probably just wasn't quirky enough to be accepted in the same spirit. Not only that, but City Slang's own staff and distributors were confused by the release and had no idea how to market it. 10 years down the line, Ellinghaus may have described Naked as, "a classic", but at the time it was recorded he was obviously less sure and when the time came to discuss a follow-up, City Slang asked to be excused. Coming some time ahead of a wave of 'unplugged' releases from various contemporaries it's tempting to think that Naked was ahead of it's time, but a more realistic assessment may be, "wrong place, wrong time, wrong label".

Next Big Ray recorded "You Get What you Deserve" a Brit Pop Album two years too early. Before the album was finished, their record label downsized and dropped them to concentrate on their other bands. (They had three bands and afterwards had two!).
