Sneering, leering and looking like they have no idea where they are or that they particularly care, Shortwave take the stage.

They look as if they have nothing to offer but their looks and attitude. Then they do the music. From the first blast two things are obvious, they are something special and they know it.

Described as the Sex Pistols meets a malfunctioning booze sodden Kraftwerk, disgust and dissatisfaction have never sounded so good. It's about that sneering attitude we develop as teenagers because nothing is good enough for us. And with their ever present dry sense of humour they get away with it every time.

Shortwave are fantastic to watch. The singer daubs on lyrics like graffiti, and unafraid to put on a show, injects some much-needed dirt into the sanitised millennium pop laboratory. The bass playing is precise and immaculate, like the angel who plays it. She has the ability to suck the adoration out of the audience's drop jaw mouths. The drummer is her antithesis, furiously demonic, an unstoppable egomaniac.

Their musical adrenaline injection to the heart arrives under the banner of "If it all ends", the title track from Shortwave's debut EP. They aren't so much a band as a revolution, and lord be praised! about time to because although I'm pretty sure 8 years of unoriginality, banal tune writing, and corporate marketing men aren't an old testament style plague from the heavens, I'm not definite.

The "If it all ends" EP is pop from the dark side. With too many parents telling their kids to turn their records up, it's time for Shortwave's revolution.

Invite them round and they'll empty your booze cabinet, trash your CD's, "borrow" your car and f#@k your mum. But you'll only thank them for it. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
