With his passionate vocals and uncompromising creativity, singer/songwriter Troi Irons updates the gritty sounds of '90s and 2000s alt-rock on releases like his self-produced 2018 EP, Antihero.
Irons – who was named after the famed city of Troy in Turkey – grew up in a musical household in Nevada. Born to Eddie Irons, drummer for the funk-rock band Brick, and singer/songwriter Anne G., Irons learned how to sing from his mother, and the family even recorded an a cappella Christmas album. When he was 12, Irons and his family moved to Southern California so he could attend an early college program at Cal State. During this time he immersed himself in the work of the Beatles and alt-rock and indie artists including Evanescence, Green Day, System of a Down, and Sufjan Stevens. With his twin sister, he formed the duo Axiz, which scored a 2008 deal with RCA and recorded an album that the label did not release.
By the time he was 18, Irons had earned a B.A. in psychology and was working as a solo artist. In 2014, he appeared on Australian DJ Will Sparks' When the Lights Go Out and worked with the Finnish duo Tom & Hills on the following year's "Lighters." He also collaborated with Lupe Fiasco, contributing vocals to two songs on his 2015 album, Tetsuo & Youth. After signing to Def Jam, Irons released his 2016 EP, Turbulence, a blend of powerful vocals and rock heft.
