Danny Thompson (born Daniel Henry Edward Thompson in Teignmouth on 4 April 1939; died 23 September 2025) was an English double bass player remembered for co-founding the English folk rock group The Pentangle and his longstanding partnership with John Martyn and, later, with Richard Thompson. Between 1987 and 2012 he recorded six solo albums. He received a Lifetime achievement award in the 2007 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Primarily a jazz player, his earliest recordings were made with bluesman Alexis Korner. As well as The Pentangle and Martyn, Thompson worked with other eclectic folkies such as Davy Graham, Nick Drake, and The Incredible String Band as well as the South African jazz pianist Chris McGregor, while his numerous session credits included Cliff Richard's "Congratulations".

Between 1995 and 2013, he was a member of the 'house band' in five of the six series of the BBC/RTE "Transatlantic Sessions".

Later he collaborated extensively with Richard Thompson as well as recording with Talk Talk, Kate Bush, David Sylvian and Everything But The Girl, to name just a few. Thompson also led his own band, Whatever which fused jazz with English, European and Celtic folk influences. He took part in the reformed original line-up of The Pentangle in 2008, subsequent to the band receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards the previous year.
