The Golden Eagle String Band has been playing around western New York State for over 25 years. They have recorded for Smithsonian/Folkways Records and performed for the Smithsonian, National Geographic, Mystic Seaport, Erie Canal Museum, Erie Canal Village, Waterloo Village (Stanhope, NJ), Strong National Museum of Play, the World canal conference and colleges and universities in the western New York area. They have toured on the Erie Canal under grants from The National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Department of Parks and Recreation. The also were in residence at Art Park, a New York State park devoted to the arts.
Their albums include two canal song albums (and songbooks): The Canaller's Songbook and Songs of the Horse-Ocean Sailor. The Smithsonian albums are: Grand Canal Ballads and Body, Boots and Britches. Their most recent album is the one heard above: On Eagle's Wings: 25th Anniversary Collection. The three cuts from this album are: Ramshackle Shack (an original by bassist John Wallace), an instrumental, popular in upstate NY, Opera Reel and an old Scottish ballad, Maid on the Shore.
