“Argentos” was born in New York in 1998, with Richard Nant in trumpet and percussion, Guillermo Klein in piano, Matt Pavolka in bass and Oscar Feldman in sax.
Occasionally, Diego Urcola (trumpets), Jeff Ballard (drums) and Iuzuke Yamamoto (percussion) would join the group.
Taking roots from Argentinean rhythms like zamba and chacarera as a mirror and using the piano and percussion (bombo leguero) as their vertebral column, they recorded their first CD, “Los Argentos” in 1999 with total liberty, and without prejudice through some Argentinean folklore standard and original compositions. They used compound rhythm structures, like Chúcaro that can be heard as a 13/4 binary bar, and in ternary like a group of four 6/8 bars plus a quarter note in the middle.
In Buenos Aires, Nant rebuilds the group with Pipi Piazzolla in drums, Álvaro Torres in piano, Matias Mendez in bass and Pablo Rodriguez and Gustavo Musso in saxes and they record in 2004 the second CD, “Manifestando”.
This second stage of Argentos reflects the mature compositions that from the point of view of rhythm have their own language and a compact sound taking advantage of the instrumental possibilities that the group has.
