There are two bands under this name:
1) Alternative band.
2) RAC band.
ACTION GROUP
1) Action Group was formed in 2004 when Mark Donnelly and Peter Boggon got together to, (in their words) “simply write songs and just see what we can create.”
There is no grand plan behind this project, however, their approach to songwriting has seen people and critics alike really taking a shine to the bands varied sound.
Dylan Mitchell quickly joined the band and this is the current line up.
PRESS
“What they’re taking Action against isn’t defined, but one can only hope it’s the entourage of piss-weak bands who throw similar poses without a fraction of this lot’s guile and knowing assurance... Wonderful” (LIVE REVIEW)
“An indie-pop quintet with a fine line in insistent choruses and electronic incursions, it’s easy to imagine some modest-budget production work turning them into serious contenders on the national scene. Everything they need is in place, from winning Pixies-style rockers like ‘Breaking Windows’ and ‘Monkey On My Back’ to the proto-Syd Barrett psychedelia of ‘Wedding Bell Craze’ and a Brian Wilsonesque penchant for echoing harmonies and technical experimentation. Somone just give them some money, and see how good they can be.”
(ALBUM REVIEW)
- The List
Comparisons have been made to a variety of artists including, QOTSA, The Pixies, Beach Boys, Arcade Fire, Go Team! & many variations in between.
“…coming from an entirely different direction Action Group, a dance-punk sextet mixing Philly soul with fuzzy guitars to brilliant effect”
- The Scotsman
“The shuddering tempo of Action Group, full of looping bass-lines and vicious full-bodied riffs, this frantic performance expertly pays homage to the swelling sound of Canadian experimentalists Broken Social Scene.”
- The Skinny
“Specialising in back to basics indie with clever lyrics and inventive twists, Action Group is the perfect antidote to the three-chord wonders currently clogging the charts”
- Scotcampus
Action Group released their debut album “Greed” in August 2007 (available from iTunes, HMV, various independent record stores). Live, Action Group are quite versatile & can perform acoustic, electro punk (laptop beats instead of a live drummer) or as a full 5 piece band, encompassing a mixture of all of these elements.
BBC Radio 1’s Vic Galloway is a big fan of Action Group & has consistently play- listed songs from their album on his shows including a show for Huw Stephens. Action Group were just listed in Vic Galloway’ top 25 albums of 2007, it’s worth noting they are the only unsigned act without label or financial support in this list. 2007 has been a great year for the band, having played a Live Session on BBC Radio 1, featured on a live DVD from Edinburgh College of Art called Art School Dance Goes On Forever (due for release in 2008) & featured in the Skinny Magazine.
Action Group’ gig schedule throughout 2007 included a headline slot at Belladrum Festival, industry showcase goNorth/Rockness, Spectrum Festival in Edinburgh’s Queens Hall & T Break plus lots of support slots at King Tuts, The Liquid Rooms & Cabaret Voltaire
