“I just wanted to start a band and play for fun,” explains singer Darren Vorel regarding beginning The Scissors back in 2002. After bouncing around various bands throughout their teens, Vorel and guitarist Steve Mocarski were eager to introduce something of their own. They didn’t hesitate to contact Matt Allison to crank out a seven song EP (The Riv Rat Rob EP) at Atlas Studios in Chicago before frequenting stages like The Fireside Bowl to get it into people’s hands. In 2004, they headed back to Atlas with new drummer David Schneider to record the first full-length. Tijeras featured a more refined sound, and set a tone for what direction the band was moving in stylistically. After one more full-length (Viva, 2006), some touring experience, and a merry-go-round of bass players, the band collectively decided their live performance was better, and more importantly more fun when Vorel handed his guitar over to guest players from time to time. Their search for a fifth member didn’t last long as Yvonne Szumski (ex-Groodies, cur-Teen Idols) was quickly integrated into the music, while giving The Scissors much more freedom vocally to move forward. Solidifying the line-up in 2009 with Ken Fletcher (ex-Plain White T’s) moving in on bass guitar, The Scissors have polished a style that was clearly forged in Chicago punk rock and evolved with five different song writers and their spectrum of influences into twelve song effort recorded by acclaimed engineer Matt Allison and produced by grammy-nominated Tom Higgenson. You Can Make It Dangerous (2010) is summed up short and concisely by Szumski, “Come for the melodies. Stay for the energy.” Read more on Last.fm.
