Lauren is a reflective indie folk artist, hailing from Calgary, Alberta. Music has been her aspiration for as long as she can remember. She started playing classical piano when she was 5 years old and continued with it until she reached Grade 8 Royal Conservatory at age 15. At that point, Lauren hit a wall of frustration and quit her training. Realizing that she only wanted to expand what she knew to be music at that time, she then came back to piano with full force, pursuing a fresh and different flavor with Jazz training. After moving to Calgary from the Greater Vancouver area in 2002, Lauren joined a youth band at church. This was the foundational place where she significantly grew into her own as a musician. As she gained confidence, she began leading worship at the youth group, young adult services, main services, and conferences and retreats throughout Alberta.
In August of 2008, after years of writing her own songs in her spare time, Lauren began her career as a solo artist, and since then, has played at house shows, coffeehouses, community centres, bars, and community events including the ever-expanding Market Collective held bi-monthly in Calgary. Over the course of the early months of 2009, she recorded three demo tracks with friend and recording engineer Andrew Hamill of Chaos Theory Studios in Calgary, and compiled these tracks to self-produce a demo EP. In July 2009, Lauren collaborated with Aaron Fraser (formerly of Calgary band You Are A Weapon), Jon Purshke (formerly of Calgary band Kiros), and Aaron Bullock (formerly of Calgary band Facing Defeat), each adding their own flair to Lauren’s catchy, yet thought-provoking songs. Carissa Webster joined the team in September 2009, and the 5-piece continues to play regular shows around Calgary. Lauren has played with bands such as Kiros, Jay and the Lovebirds, Mapping the Escape, Mindil Beach Markets, Reuben Bullock, JJ Shiplett, and Katelyn Steinwand, as well as many other local artists and bands in and around Calgary. In October 2009 Lauren ventured outside of Calgary and went on a two week tour through Alberta and BC, playing a total of six shows with local bands and artists.
This free-spirited singer songwriter is influenced by such artists as Coldplay, Copeland, Norah Jones, Sara McLachlin, Eisley, Feist, Regina Spektor, and a vast array of other artists and genres, which all contribute to her unique sound. She is deeply inspired by originality in other artists and displays it compellingly in her own music and songwriting.
Lauren draws on inspiration for her songs in the everyday, seemingly insignificant happenings and musings in life. “I find that if I try and be inspired by any experience it helps me look on things with a different perspective. Music is a gift that I want to share with the world. I want to inspire and find common ground with people, and music is the best way I know how to do that. I want to be able to speak hope and peace and love into people through what I write.”
Music is a gift she wishes to use to advocate for those who do not have a voice in our culture and world. She demonstrates this through her role as an Artist Associate with World Vision, using her musical influence to promote child sponsorship.
Lauren anticipates only going forward and further with her music career. By fall of 2010, Lauren plans to release her first full length album and continue touring.
