One of Lennie Tristano's key followers, Sal Mosca has long had a style similar to Tristano's but he also infused his own musical personality. Mosca attended New York University and the New York College of Music in addition to studying piano with Tristano from 1947-55. Mosca worked on and off with Lee Konitz (as early as 1949) and Warne Marsh through the years (including the Konitz-Marsh Quintet in the mid-1970s), playing on Marsh's "Live in Berlin" album and performed with his own small groups in clubs. Following Tristano's example, Mosca has spent much of his career as a music teacher, and only played in public occasionally. Mosca has recorded as a leader for Wave (1955 and 1959), Interplay (1977), Choice (1979) and Zinnia. In early 2007, Mosca became very ill while on tour in Europe, and died on Saturday, July 28, 2007.
