I Sold the Arabs the Moon Lyrics

And I was the man who sold the Arabs the moon
The Emirate Princes, their hands manicured
Their servants with luggage, they followed behind
The African concubines, regal and tall

And I was the man who sold the Arabs the moon
They festooned their flags with crescent moons

And I was the man who sold the English the sea
They wanted the afternoon breezes it bore
The sweet smell of spices from over the sea

The afternoon showers it brought during tea

And I was the man who sold the English the sea
I cowered before great battleship guns

And I was the man who sold the Yankees the sky
The black of the night and the blue of the day
The endless horizon of hope and desire

And I was the man who sold the Yankees the sky,
The English the Sea
The Arabs the moon

He is also an accomplished producer, having produced albums for such artists as Counting Crows and Sparklehorse.

On February 1, 2011, Lowery released his first solo album, The Palace Guards. In announcing the record, Lowery stated, "After 27 years I have decided it is time for a solo album. This is not the end of Cracker or Camper Van Beethoven. I will continue recording and playing with both bands."

Prior to this release, David released a Promotional Demo Tape in his name 1990 prior to Cracker having a name, with early versions of songs that later appeared on the first Cracker album. David has also frequently placed demos of songs on secret websites in his name - final versions of these songs have generally ended up on Camper Van Beethoven or Cracker records. In addition, some solo songs have appeared on his own MySpace page.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Lowery teaches at the University of Georgia and writes about the way the music and tech industry is changing the way artists are paid. His Trichordist blog advocates better suppor for artists and challenges the way music is distributed in the industry today. He has announced his intention to publish a memoir in the near future.
