D'ERLANGER is a Japanese band that is one of the first visual kei bands and widely considered to be a part of and important to the formation of Visual Kei. The band created in 1982 formed in 1983 and had disbanded seven years later (apparently due to management issues) in 1990. Their guitarist, CIPHER, was only 15-16 years old at the time of their formation. Their current vocalist Kyo and their current drummer TETSU were the famous X JAPAN guitarist hide's bandmates in yokosuka SAVER TIGER.
They were one of the pioneers of the so-called “Visual Kei” and had a great influence on the bands and artists that followed such as DIR EN GREY, MUCC, LUNA SEA , cali≠gari, The Slut Banks, 黒夢, Hyde and more...
It is well known that “D'ERLANGER” is French for “lewd seduction,” but “erlanger” is not listed in the French dictionary (Oxford Concise French Dictionary). As shown on the cover of their first album, there was a time when they advocated their own genre as “SADISTICAL PUNK''.
After D’ERLANGER’s disbandment, Kyo formed Die In Cries, had a solo career (see Kyo), and then formed BUG. After TETSU’s departure from ZI:KILL, which he had joined right after the disbandment of D’ERLANGER, TETSU formed BODY alongside his ex. D’ERLANGER bandmate CIPHER, and then the two of them later joined up with ex. ZI:KILL, Seiichi to form a new group, CRAZE. SEELA , D’ERLANGER’s bassist, formed Fix with ex. MAZERAN, Shoji, before later participating in Atomic ZaZa with fellow ex. Fix member and vocalist Tezya, before finally joining No Stars Innovation and departing from that band some years later in early 2006.
In December 2006 D’ERLANGER announced their reformation, and since 2007, they’ve been active again with many new albums: "LAZZARO" (2007) being the first of many that they have put out since their revival. They have been active since then and are releasing music to this day.
A tribute album to the band called D'erlanger Tribute Album ~Stairway to Heaven~ was released on September 13, 2017. It contains covers of their songs by acts such as DIR EN GREY, Hyde, TERU and Hisashi, and Psycho le Cému. D'ERLANGER then hosted and performed at Abstinence's Door #008 and #009 at EX Theater Roppongi on September 15 and 16. The first included Angelo and Dezert, the second saw lynch. and Psycho le Cému perform, while D'ERLANGER performed with Hyde the first night and Kiyoharu the second. The meaning of this album was to celebrate D'ERLANGER's 10th anniversary of their reunion.
And still D'ERLANGER keeps their popularity in Japan as the one of the number one known bands. The huge respect for Kyo never disappeared, he is still known as the founder of visual kei and sadistical punk.
