Latin Grammy nominated guitarist and composer Sergio Lara began his musical journey at age 9, learning classical guitar and Latin rhythms with a guitar instructor and later on the music of The Beatles and many other artists in various styles like blues, rock, folk, bluegrass, jazz and flamenco.
He found the music of Django Reinhardt, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, Tony Rice, Sam Bush, David Grisman and many others learning to play various guitar styles as well as other instruments like mandolin and 5 string banjo.
Sergio spent a few years in Nashville, Tennessee playing live and participating in various recording projects before heading back to San Antonio, Texas.
In 1989 Sergio Lara formed the instrumental guitar duo 'Lara & Reyes'. They performed flamenco-influenced Latin guitar music, blazing a trail in the genre and becoming very popular with acclaimed performances in both the USA and Mexico.
During their time together, they released seven albums (see discography) and earned a Latin Grammy nomination in 2001 for "Best Pop Instrumental Album" for their 6th album "WORLD JAZZ".
Their last album "LARA & REYES" was released in 2006 and won "Best Latin Album" on the 2007 Indie Acoustic Project Awards.
In 2004 Sergio started his own record label "Fusion Acustica Music" and has released 4 new solo albums to date.
On the first one "CON LA LLUVIA", Sergio plays Acoustic and Spanish guitars, Synth guitar, acoustic an electric mandolins and various percussion instruments and he is backed by piano, bass, drums, violin and percussion.
In 2011 Sergio released a new jazz album, "SUNBURST" Another collection of original compositions and this time he plays electric guitar exclusively and he is backed by an ensemble of horns, bass, drums and percussion.
In 2012 he returns with the release of "GUITARS & MANDOLINS", an all instrumental new recording of traditional Mexican and American Folk songs, where he plays all the instruments like mandolin, acoustic and Spanish guitars and banjo.
And in 2013 Sergio Lara presents "ACOUSTIC", a new collection of original compositions played on acoustic guitar. A lovely group of intimate acoustic duos with a melodic and warmth quality that shows his love for the acoustic guitar.
Throughout the years Sergio Lara has played in various venues, including many private events, schools and universities, jazz clubs and important concert halls in the US and Mexico, like el "Palacio De Bellas Artes" ("Palace of Fine Arts") in Mexico City, and various music festivals like the "Jazz Tracks Festival" in Lake Tahoe, NV, "America Festival" in San Jose, CA, "JazzSAlive" in San Antonio, TX, "Catalina Island Jazz Festival" and many more and has shared the stage with many international artists like Julio Iglesias, Ray Charles, Strunz & Farah, Craig Chaquico, Larry Carlton, Bireli Lagrene, Sam Bush, Dr. John, Wayne Shorter and many more.
He has also been included in more than 2 dozen CD compilations released around the world, that also include Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Pat Metheny, Vicente Amigo, Sting, George Benson, Dave Brubeck, Strunz & Farah, Ottmar Liebert, Egberto Gismonti and Oscar Castro Neves, among many others and has played in various albums by well known artists like Peter Rowan, Tish Hinojosa and many more.
Now in 2015, Sergio continues his musical journey with different projects and plans to release a live DVD from upcoming concerts.
