Appellative is the solo project of Zachary Wattus, from the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. Blending influence from Cloudkicker with post-rock tendencies, his compositions are densely layered and built on a “repetition legitimises” ethos.

Zachary began releasing music as Appellative with his debut EP Daybook. in August of 2012 on Bandcamp as pay-what-you-wish download. Its four tracks were written, recorded and produced in one sitting on the day they were started. The EP was added to streaming services along with a previously unreleased track in November 2015.

Over the following years, his output consisted of singles until April 1, 2015 saw the release of Nomenclature. A 6-track EP that was composed almost entirely in a 16-minute improvisation in January of that year. This was the first Appellative release to release outside of Bandcamp, additionally launching on streaming platforms with the inclusion of Meet Me In Montauk, a single previously released on Bandcamp, as a bonus track.
The album received critical acclaim and was included in the (now defunct) Arctic Drones Albums of the Year list for 2015.

In October of 2015, Music For A Dark Room was released. Darker and more ambient in nature and comprised largely of singles released between Daybook. and Nomenclature along with previously unreleased material. The title track was a remix of an incomplete song by Refurin.

Following these releases began a five-year hiatus with only Liquid Light, an improvised drone performance, releasing in 2017.

On July 16, 2021 Lilac broke the silence with his first track since 2017. Followed in July 29 with a second single Even When We’re Apart.

Appellative’s new album Everything I Didn’t Say is out August 10, 2021. Thematically it is about releasing all the songs that were written following Nomenclature but that never came together and saw a proper release. Read more on Last.fm.
