A native of East St. Louis, Illinois, he is a self-taught composer. Early musical influences include R&B/Soul greats like Al Green, Lou Rawls, The Temptations, James Brown, and Smokey Robinson. Later, the list would include the likes of The Commodores, George Clinton, EW&F, BabyFace, Prince, and Seal.
