Tuấn Vũ, born Nguyễn Văn Tài, is the 4th child in a large family, which includes his 3 brothers and 6 sisters. Tuấn Vũ was born on 16th Dec 1959 at Phan Thiết, Bình Thuận. He migrated to USA in 1979. Then he worked as a fisherman to earn for his hard life.
Tuấn Vũ is somewhat lucky owning a magnificent voice as well as great passion for music, especially romantic type. He loves singing everywhere whenever having free time. Having troubles in applying for official musical classes (due to financial difficulties), but Tuấn Vũ has taken great efforts to satisfy his tremendous enthusiasm for singing. He tried his best to perfect his own superb voice, improve his ligature skill and understand the way to tap rhythmically as well. By trying hardly day by day, his performing skills made a lot of progress. At that time, as he himself revealed, his idols was the female vocalist “Queen of Sorrow” Giao Linh and the famous composer-singer Trần Thiện Thanh – Nhật Trường.
A breakthrough came to his life one day in 1980 as Tuấn Vũ took a chance to meet the famed singer Trúc Mai and his well-known career started at that moment. The stage name “Tuấn Vũ” was named after his 2 pet nephews Tuấn and Vũ. Tuấn Vũ chose this name to remember his family, which has still been living in Vietnam. Since then, his professional was mentored and helped with by Trúc Mai and many other legends such as Duy Khánh, Nhật Trường, Giao Linh, etc. Along with this, his well-endowed musical talent altogether helped him set a firm position in audiences’ minds at the very first performances (in 1981).
After his successful debut, Tuấn Vũ was many times on the stage becoming new favorite singer in the heart of the admirers. However, his first album was just eventually recorded in 1985. In this album, named “Đôi mắt người xưa”, Tuấn Vũ sang together with his idols, “Queen of Sorrow” Giao Linh, making an immortal CD for almost listeners. Thanh Lan Studio was the first centre enjoyed recording Tuấn Vũ’s albums. After that, most of all the centers overseas implicitly competed for Tuấn Vũ’s cooperation.
The period of 1988 to 1994 was the splendid peak in his career. His pieces were warmly welcomed by even the most demanding listeners due to his skillful and expressive voice. A series of “Albums of Masterpieces” was recorded; many immortal love songs were represented as well, captivating all audiences’ souls. Besides, Tuấn Vũ was the pioneer and also the most successful artist singing a very difficult genre known as Potpourri. His Potpourris were carefully chosen and music-set up by himself, showing his endowed talent once again. He has bequeathed 5 immortal albums marked Potpourri Album No.1 to No.5 in this genre, including 10 single Potpourris. These special pieces really made Tuấn Vũ unique and different from the other legends; and, these songs themselves were wonderful masterpieces of Tuấn Vũ in particular, and of the soft music style in general.
By his master performances, Tuấn Vũ easily became the star in the mind of all the audiences, domestically and overseas. At that period, Tuấn Vũ ‘s songs were the most popular entertaining form of all Vietnamese; and, his reputation should be compared to those of well-known politicians. At that time, the prestigious writer Nguyên Sa tenderly called Tuấn Vũ “The Great Phoenix of the Overseas Musical Sky”. Tuấn Vũ had traveled to many countries all over the world. His performances were warmly welcomed everywhere. All the music centers really hoped for Tuấn Vũ ‘s agreements for joint efforts. Then Tuấn Vũ became the most record-keeping male vocalist with many titles such as “The most beloved vocalist”, “Best singer”, “The most album-published singer”, etc.
