Bobby Earl Smith, born June 29, 1943 in San Angelo, Texas, is an Austin-based singer, songwriter and bassist. Smith first came to prominence for his work with the seminal Austin-based Freda And The Firedogs in 1972. The Firedogs are refered to as the "cornerstone" of what became known variously as the "outlaw" or "progressive" (or even "hippie") country movement, later including artists like Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Doug Sahm and Asleep at the Wheel.

Following the breakup of the Firedogs in 1974, Smith played with Alvin Crow, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. In 1980 he recorded with Kimmie Rhodes and Joe Gracey on “Kimmie Rhodes and the Jackalope Brothers,” his last session until the solo album "RearView Mirror,” released in 2000.
