Derek Luttrell is more than your average guitar toting songwriter. Heʼs a master of brevity and storytelling. At just 20 years old, Derek writes with narrative power of Johnny Cash and the well-crafted melodies of Randy Newman, all carried by an old voice and accompanied by his percussive slap-style guitar.

His songs are coated in empathy and rich with history, with characters ranging from a victim of Hurricane Katrina to a Southern runaway, from a man on death row to a Union soldier. He does have his share of love songs filled with the angst of youth, but unlike the flowery and flighty ballads of his contemporaries, thereʼs a believability born from the almighty cliché of the shy, small town boy trying to make a life in the big city.
