alternation is a bangladeshi alternative rock band formed in 2004 by guitarist Arifeen Mahmood Khan aka Imran and vocalist Towhidul Islam Khan aka Shumanta.

When asked what the significance of the name is, Imran ( who actually came up with the name ) said,

" we explore or love to mess with all the popular rock and metal genre and gather up sounds from them and transforming them into a new sound. which is called alteration.we like to go to deep inside of music.the output of our composition contains the emotions of our life, our surroundings and our unconditional love for music. let it be classical or let it be western. "



To look for the band's roots, we have to go back in time to the year 1994. Shumanta and Imran met in an arts school where both of them took art and music lessons. They used to live in the same neighbourhood. Even though after 1997 the two of them hadn't met each other again till 2001. But after that, they kept regular contact and hanged out.

It was in Imran's house where with the help of an old battered up hawaiian guitar, the band started its journey. Early in 2004 was the time when Imran and Shumanta started composing songs of their own. But the band itself was born in august 2004. Imran invited two of his friends to play the guitar and bass. In 21st august the band first sat together to jam in a practice pad in Maghbazar. Asif was the lead guitarist and Saidur played the bass. In the first jamming, the skeletons of two songs were made, which later became the tracks " Untitled Conversation " and " Mrittudar ".

There was no fixed drummer at the time for alternation. So they experimented with different drummers who would suit their style. In the meantime Imran's cousin Preanka joined as the second vocalist for the band. Arman was the drummer who finally stuck with the band. In the february of 2005 the band first went into studio to record their first single " Untitled Conversation ". This mellow based song sang by both preanka and shumanta became alternation's first signature song.

After " Untitled Conversation " the band tried composing many songs. " Onurodh ", " Protigga " were some of the songs they wrote during 2006. Meanwhile the lineup of the band changed too. Saidur and Preanka left the band for studying abroad. Arman also left for personal reasons. Preanka was replaced by Sabria and drummer Hasibul Islam aka Shaibal joined the band. The change of lineup made it hard for the band members to find their own music that would express the band's individuality. Finally after the departure of Asif and Sabria on the end of 2006, the band recruited Kazi Shahriar aka Ros as the lead guitarist and Meherdad Yusuf Ahmed aka Meherdad as the bassist for the band.

Finally the band found itself. All the members shared the same taste in music, the same ideology and had the same amount of love for the art of creating music. The main change that came to the band was that it finally started performing in concerts. Live audiences inspired the band to excel themselves, to make some drastic changes. The song " Praoshchitter Prangon " was composed during the early 2006 and " Shesh Shurjodoy " another one of alternation's previous rock oriented song was developed. These two songs became the identity of alternation through its early stage days. Other cover songs like "Smoke on the water" by Deep Purple, "Yellow" by Coldplay, " With or without you " by U2 and "Classico" by Tenacious D rocked the audiences. Shows in BRAC university, RCC, Decagon Cafe, DMC, Sports Zone, Words N' Pages etc. in Dhaka, made them a more mature band.

However in the middle of 2007, a notable change came by the composition of the song " Cryptool ". The band changed their default tuning to Dropped D. Unlike all of their other songs, " Cryptool " represents another side of alternation. Random changes of tempo, bass and guitar solos, killer riffs and vocal screams make the song one of its kind. The reaction from the audience for " Cryptool " also inspired the band to compose their next anthem song " King-Fuc-k-ingdom" .

After 3 and half years of journey and experimenting with sounds, alternation now plans to crossmix the classic rock sound with new age alternative metal and come up with a unique sound as the name of the band suggests. They also plan to keep composing acoustic based or soft alternative ballads to balance the both sides of the band.

alternation expects to create a place in every music listener who appreciate good music by releasing their first single " Praoshchitter Prangon " on the mixed album " Audhishtaan " and move forward to give more and more for the love of music.
