DJ Dark Flow started DJing in the spring of 2008, for his radio show Adrift In The Airwaves on UConn's WHUS 91.7FM. Since then, he has been steadily releasing music content with the release of his first dubstep mix of his Deep Bass series, Volume I on New Years day 2011, and a handful of mashups of songs spanning different genres of electronic music. In addition to mixing, Dark Flow also is getting into producing of original dubstep and electronic tracks, both with his collaboration named Necropolis, and on his own under his personal moniker Satellite Beats.
It is no surprise that DJ Dark Flow has traversed so much musical ground. Since an early age, Stefan Walczak, aka Dark Flow, was raised on music. His father, a huge music fan and collector, would take him to shows at an early age and share music stories with him while growing up. In school, Stefan played a variety of instruments in the school band, such as the trombone, alto saxophone, and trumpet, before dropping out near the end of middle school. He then decided to begin playing the guitar, playing mostly by ear and learning chords, while simultaneously playing trumpet in the school's jazz band. Over the course of this time, Stefan's interest in the guitar began to take off and It was these next few years, when entering high school, where Stefan was brooding with creativity.
After moving from California to Connecticut in 2004, Stefan quickly became familiar with players at his high school and formed his high school band Breathe, a band that was fueled by a shared love for music, and greatly inspired by musical groups such as Pink Floyd, The Mars Volta, and Nine In Nails. It was also around this time when Stefan was able to get his hands on a 16-track recorder, and decided to use this to his advantage. Thus, Satellite beats was born. Stefan began producing electronic and acoustic guitar demos and tracks onto his recorder, as well as recording sessions with Breathe, and through this he became very well accustomed to recording technology. Self taught on the guitar and on the recorder, he made a few impressive cuts from his early years of recording that he is happy to share with you today.
After graduating high school in 2007, the University of Connecticut was in Stefan’s sights. After a couple weeks of classes, Stefan soon learned that UConn was the home of the community public radio station WHUS 91.7. Stefan became quickly involved and before you could auto-sync your ipod he was in the studio, sitting at the controls of his radio show Adrift In The Airwaves, where he lurked in the late night hours playing progressive rock, post-rock, experimental and psychedelic rock. Slowly, as his show began to involve and include some more hip-hop and electronic music, DJ Dark Flow began to emerge from the corners of the dark, and creeping into Stefan’s sets. It wasn’t much longer before DJ Dark Flow fully took over, and began his reign of terror and love over the air. DJ Dark Flow took the zaniest jazz beats, the highest flying glitchy bleeps, and mixed it in with the furious power of the drum beats. Mixing electronica spanning the galaxies of reggae, psychedelic and dub, post-rock, jazz, hip-hop, dubstep, jungle and experimental electronic frequencies to vibrate your ears. DJ Dark Flow puts listeners on a musical journey that is by certain unlike any other. It has been found through much corroborating evidence that the best way to take it all in and prepare for such a journey is to sit back and relax. You will be back before you know it!
By the summertime of 2011, Adrift In The Airwaves went on a temporary hiatus due to Stefan’s graduating with a degree in English and creative writing. Since then Stefan found a writing internship with hip-hop online music blog Surviving The Golden Age, and has been submitting music reviews to be published online. He started volunteering at Bridgeport’s listener-supported radio station WPKN 89.5FM in the Fall of that year. On November 18, DJ Dark Flow made his debut live appearance at DUBBAGE, where he spinned a set of awesome dubstep tunes, loosely constructed around his third Deep Bass Mix, Volume III. By the end of December, DJ Dark Flow started the collaborative effort titled Necropolis with a fellow musician and longtime friend, and together they produced their first dubstep track!
Now, in 2012, DJ Dark Flow is on top of his game, resuscitating Adrift In The Airwaves for another weekly late night excursion on WPKN 89.5 and taking Connecticut cities by storm, spinning some of the illest electronic tunes, both on the air, and in the bars for the crowds of people that come to see him. Producing has even more fruit to bear, and more wisdom has yet to be shared by Adrift In The Airwaves and Satellite Beats.
