He was an accomplished musician, his piano skills were on display in Swell Party - a Cole Porter revue; he also composed scores for several musicals, including King and La Tosca. He died from complications of AIDS at the age of 37, a year after recording a solo album - Martin Smith: A Handful Of Keys.
