The main goal of the Segréis de Lisboa is to contribute towards the revival of Portuguese and Spanish Early Music.
Established in 1972 by lute player and musicologist Manuel Morais, this ensemble consists of a variable number of singers and players, all of whom are essentially concerned with approaching this kind of repertoire as authentically as possible, on the basis of our current musicological, historical and stylistic knowledge, and using either original instruments or modern copies thereof.
They have given concerts all over Europe, the United States, Brazil, the Far East and India, always meeting with the greatest applause from audiences and critics alike. The latter was enthusiastically reviewed by the New York Times (June 11, 1990).
They have recorded for the EMI/Valentim de Carvalho, Movieplay, Philips and Portugaler labels, and received a Choc award in Le Monde de La Musique (No. 201, July-August 1996). In 1991 the ensemble was awarded the Medal for Cultural Merit by the Portuguese Secretary of State for Culture.
The Segréis de Lisboa are now the oldest Portuguese professional ensemble dedicated to the study and promotion of Iberian Early Music.
