Anvil Smashers are a Maine-based homemade music trio. The group began in 2014, with siblings Ella and Lucien (and their cousin Rowan) creating simple songs with the stock loops included in GarageBand. They began making their own music in 2015 with Jiggy, a series of pseudo-rap freestyles and odd a capella tunes. The songs ranged from goofy to incoherent, and were recorded in large batches at a time, typically with little (if any) editing. Due to the largely improvised and irreverent nature of their recording style, the three relatives (and lifelong best friends) would often break out in laughter mid-song - sometimes so much so that it would momentarily derail the song or even end it entirely. Their process kept the same spirit and functionality even as hand claps and a capella vocal instrumentation expanded to piano, and later synth organ, conga drum, and/or the occasional kazoo, full drum set, synthesizer, flute, ukulele, acoustic guitar, electric bass, melodica, etc. Their more well-known releases include Let Your Hands Make a House (2017), Made of Dust (2018), Gay and Mean (2018), Snack (2018), Horse Songs (2019), and Sonic Interloper (2020).
