Front Porch Step is the solo acoustic project consisting of Jake McElfresh. Hailing from Newark, Ohio, United States Front Porch Step released their debut EP in 2012, titled "Endearment." Later that year Front Porch Step made a more substantive release, titled "So help me God." It has been self-described as "raw emotion coming from someone who is not afraid to let anyone know how he feels." Content matter includes "love, heartbreak, lust and his struggles with God and everything around him." Front Porch Step released "Island of the Misfit Boy," on YouTube, in early July 2012, gaining popularity after receiving significant attention on reddit. McElfresh proceeded to record the song and released a studio version of the aforementioned track, which was released via the Front Porch Step bandcamp in early August 2012. Late July, the Front Porch Step YouTube page was hacked (shortly after Island of the Misfit Boy had reached 100 000+ views), and all the videos were deleted. McElfresh has stated that, due to many of the YouTube videos being rather old, there were no backups and could, therefore, not be uploaded.

In mid 2014, multiple stories from underage female fans surfaced claiming that he had taken advantage of them by soliciting nude photos, sending them himself, and emotionally manipulating them.
