Jake Ciccotelli formed Overgrow alone in 2018, releasing a trio of EPs via Common Ground Collective while a full band formed with old friends. Walls of Mirrors, the band’s debut LP, was written while Overgrow’s current lineup locked into place. Jake is now joined by guitarist Alec Mackowiak, drummer Jon Clark, and bassist Alex Miller.
After opting out of a re-upped record contract and ending a booking relationship, a blank slate caused Jake to refocus on the internal strife that this project brings to the forefront. The album’s title stemmed from the earliest tracks written, a symbol of being confronted by issues ignored until solitude forces introspection. As Jake explains, “when you have people and things to distract you in your life, it’s easy to ignore your own problems. Overgrow’s commitment to a fresh beginning retains the expansive guitar figures and wide-panning storytelling that they’ve made their own. The difference is the confidence and intent, which Jake made the LP’s mission statement as the band’s future hung in the balance. Inspired by artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Gleemer, Overgrow strikes a hard line between incisive self-analysis and heart-rending songcraft. “Being in such a place of uncertainty, I just needed to make my own favorite album. I needed to remind myself that this thing could still work.” Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
