About Staff Johnson
Watching Staff on stage, you see someone cool and smooth with energy, ambition, and charisma. But catch his eye under the bright lights and you’re pulled into something deeper. You’re captivated by something real—a different world-view. Staff (known to his audiences as “Staff Johnson”), a clearly talented writer, rapper and rhythmic master, was born July 14, 1984 in Soul, Korea and raised in the Midwestern United States. With a Korean mother and a father of Hawaiian and African descent, he had a racially charged childhood growing up in Leavenworth, Kan. This gave him the focus and the heart to win an uphill battle. Watching his dad struggle and raise his family from poverty to the middle class gave him the tools to be aggressive—to match his ambition with discipline and direction. Inspired by all genres of music, Staff Johnson brings the attitude of rock, the aroma of jazz, the stories of country told in the word of rap and the spirit of gospel in his songs.
“My music comes from the soul, is told by the heart and is uncompromised in its truth. I pray that each song I make would touch someone else’s life but most of all please God.”
Staff began banging out songs and beats at the age of sixteen in the basement of his fathers house. With his cousin, they developed their sound and sold their music to friends, family and schoolmates around town. Staff got on the fast track to the music industry as an audio engineering major in Kansas City. In 2003, J White, JROC and Staff formed a group called Freelanze opening for a plethora of national recording artist, in company with many other local artist in the Lawrence and Kansas City area. By 2005 Freelanze was on the fast track to start-um with regular radio spins and club promotions, but despite the popularity and success of his group Staff still wasn’t happy.
“I felt empty, we had V.I.P in clubs, free drinks, and a numerous amount of fans, but I was dying inside. I quit the group in 2006 nearly at the peak of our success and some how found God within all my destruction. The Lord saved me. I know I’m perfect, no man is but what I do know is that I was lost and now I’m found. Despite my failures, despite my sins, he keeps me and is the only reason I’m alive. Christ has given me life.”
On a “radical” mission to bring wandering hearts to the Truth, Staff Johnson continues to push himself to inspire others to see the joy and freedom that comes in Jesus, and that in these days of darkness our lives can be beautiful. In 2010, Staff Johnson is tearing up the scene with smash hits like “ROCK-STAR”, “KISS” and ground breaking single “SUPERHERO”. Along with mentoring youth groups, performing at concert halls and ministering at local churches, Staff Johnson continues to soar and has an increasing following among young across the nation. We are but moments away from seeing God breakthrough in the lives of people around the world and with the grace of God Staff pleads in truth and love that the kingdom. Read more on Last.fm.
