Sa Dingding was born in Mongolia to a Mongolian mother and Chinese father. From a young age, she was interested with ethnic music. Talking about her music, she has said "Before we start to talk, we know how to sing."

Besides singing in Mandarin Chinese, Sa Dingding also sings in Sanskrit, Tibetan, and a language she created herself to express emotions in music. Sa Dingding plays multiple instruments, including the zheng, Chinese drum, Chinese gong and the horse-head fiddle.

Sa Dingding's interest in folk music, dance and Chinese minority religions - especially Buddhism - have all had strong influences on her 2007 album Alive. This album blends Eastern and Western style techniques to produce a very unique and cultural genre of music.
