----------
Parviz Rahmanpanah was born in Tehran, Iran. At the age of 9, with the encouragement of his father he enrolled in Tehran’s National Conservatory, where he chose târ as his instrument and began his studies under tutelage of Master Reza Vohdāni, Soon after, he began studying the radif -- a collection of all Iranian modes called; dastgah(s)—written by the renowned Master, Ali Akbar Khan Shahnazi. Later, in 1976, he came to the U.S to pursue his studies in music.

In the 80’s he played the tar and oud with the late diva of traditional Iranian music, Hayedeh.
In 1993, Parviz began a new approach in playing the tar. By bringing together the timbre of the târ and the versatility of electronic/Western instruments, he attracted many younger listeners to the beautiful and soul soothing sound of the traditional târ, Parviz has made history by this new approach. By breaking the cultural barriers in music, he paved the way for the up and coming, talented generation of young Iranian musicians to do the same: experimenting with Western sounds while preserving the authenticity of the Persian melodies and modal system.
By creating a harmonized fusion between classical Iranian music and Western Electronic sounds, while using the rules of Western progressions and cadences, Parviz has done his part in bridging the gap between the two cultures of Iran, and the West, through the power of music.
Today, he is continuing his studies in the field of ethnomusicology right here at UCLA’s School of Art and Architecture. Parviz’s latest project, which is due to debut in early 2011, features ustad Shujaat Hussein Khān on sitar, and ustad, Abhiman Kaushal on tabla. Read more on Last.fm.
