On October 28th 2014, North Atlantic Explorers release their ambitious new concept album, "My Father Was A Sailor", a collection of nautical-themed songs inspired by Glenn D’Cruze’s late father’s life at sea with the British Merchant Navy. Its highlights include a full choir singing multi-part harmonies, a horn section featuring JP Carter (Destroyer, Dan Mangan) and narratives by Stuart David (Belle & Sebastian, Looper).
There’s a laid back 1970’s vibe, a theatrical quality and a prevailing undercurrent of sadness and beauty flowing throughout the record while retaining the atmospherics and layers of melody from its predecessor, the critically acclaimed "Skylines."
Scotsman Stuart David contributes gale warning and shipping forecast narratives on "The Sailor & The Stenographer" and "Hebrides, Bailey, Fair Isle" respectively. Also included is a cover of "South" written by Mark Powell & Lupe Núñez-Fernández of European indie pop duo Pipas.
Album Trailer and videos were filmed throughout Scotland and aboard an Icelandic container ship on the wintery North Atlantic/North Sea by filmmaker Greg Gillespie.
ABOUT NORTH ATLANTIC EXPLORERS …
North Atlantic Explorers are a cinematic band from Vancouver captained by Glenn D’Cruze who stepped out from behind the drum kit to navigate his own ship. They released their debut album Skylines in 2005. It’s a beautiful, engaging, and sonically stimulating record flavoured with strings, horns, loops, samples, vibes, xylophones, banjo, upright bass and vintage organs and pianos, with Glenn handling the songwriting and much of the instrumentation including lead vocals, guitars, drums, and piano.
Glenn played with Vancouver bands who released albums on Nettwerk and Mint Records and performed in thirteen countries, including appearances at South-By-Southwest in Texas and Denmark’s Roskilde Festival with the likes of Neil Young, New Order, Sonic Youth and Spiritualized.
