Sofia Hoffmann is a Portuguese-German singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Lisbon, Portugal. Her music seamlessly blends jazz, pop, and Indian classical influences, reflecting her diverse cultural background and musical education.

Musical Background and Influences:

Sofia began her musical journey studying classical and acoustic guitar under Walter Lopes. She later pursued vocal training with Maria do Rosário Coelho and furthered her jazz studies in Milan with Laura Fedele and in Lisbon with Maria João. Her exposure to Indian classical music came through her mentor, the late Acharya Roop Verma, a disciple of Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan. This mentorship deeply influenced her musical style, leading her to incorporate the sitar into her compositions.

Discography:

• One Soul (2019): Sofia’s debut album features a blend of jazz and pop, with personal compositions that reflect her life experiences. The album includes collaborations with prominent Portuguese jazz musicians and showcases her skills as a vocalist and sitarist.
• Rebirth (2022): This album marks a fusion of jazz, Indian classical music, and Lusophone songs. Produced by Grammy-winning pianist John Beasley, “Rebirth” includes contributions from sitarist Arjun Verma. The album was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, with initial recordings done remotely due to travel restrictions. Notable tracks include “Esperarei,” a song inspired by the longing experienced during lockdowns, and “Nunca Me Esqueci de Ti,” a rendition of a classic Portuguese song that gained international radio play.
• [In]LOVE (2024): Sofia’s latest album explores various facets of love through a mix of jazz, bossa nova, and world music. The album features a duet with Brazilian artist Ivan Lins on the track “O Sonho” and includes the song “Não Sejas Triste, Amália,” inspired by the life of fado singer Amália Rodrigues.
