Kudamaloor Janardanan enjoys a special status among the top-most array of flautists in India. A self-taught artiste, Janardanan made it to the centre stage solely by virtue of the amazing ease and dexterity with which he played the melodious bamboo.
Interestingly, the maestro began his musical journey of a thousand miles with a humble toy flute, commonly found in traditional festival fairs in Kerala, his homeland. The fact that flautists of repute were less in number in the state was a blessing in disguise for Janardanan, since it made him his own Guru, critic and friend in music.
Janardanan realized quite early in life, that the hues of ragas which the seven notes of music give rise to through some divine permutation was the only ultimate truth in music. No tutor could be better than the music within you, if you are the passionate student.
The technique of imbibing the ‘gayaki ang’ (vocal music element) in his fingering techniques turned out to be a huge success factor in Janardanan’s professional life, since any keen musical ear could almost recognize parts of the lyrics of any song he played on the flute, having never heard it before!
The absolute comfort with which he sails over octaves on the flute has always been one of the well-known traits of this ingenious flautist. A much sought-after concert performer, he never fails to leave any musical mind completely enchanted by his melody.
The Pied Piper to all who appreciate true music, this musician has a large number of faithful fans following him wherever he performs. Janardanan has gifted his enthusiastic fans with what they would cherish the most- his masterpieces in the form of recordings.
Creativity can never be tied down within limits; it just pervades on to wherever it can flow freely. This is true with Janardanan as well, for he has chased the horizon beyond Carnatic music, proving to be an excellent music composer. Besides orchestrating many a devotional music album, he has composed music for classical dances, encapsulating a choreographer’s perspective, and background score for documentary films, capturing a director’s vision.

Today, an ‘A’ Grade artiste of the All India Radio and an empanelled musician of the ICCR, Janardanan maintain a distinct and inimitable style. Although praise and accolades come his way, Janardanan believes that sky is the limit as far as exploring music is concerned. This belief has refined his incredible imagination, which enriches the melodious thoughts of a beautiful musical mind and makes him second to none.
