A Philly native and winner of the Philadelphia Music Alliance "Folk Singer/Songwriter" award in 1992, Karl studied with Bob Gorman in high school, a session musician at Sigma Sound Studios (Gamble & Huff, David Bowie, Ojays, et al) then later with folks like Chris Smither, Danny O'Keefe, and Joel Tipke. While performing primarily as a singer/songwriter in the pop-folk idiom, Karl has recorded many hard rock songs, and jazz ballads throughout his career. His first performance was as an opener at the Riddle Paddock in Lima, PA, where Jim Croce often performed as the main act. He played in a band in college, sharing the stage with acts like Jeffrey Gaines.

Over the years, he has played a long list of clubs from coast to coast, and opened for acts as varied as Train and Chris Smither—and has performed at venues as varied as the Tin Angel in Philadelphia, the O.K. Hotel in Seattle, the Sioux City Folk Festival in Iowa, The Pacific Northwest Folklife Festival and Sweetwater in Mill Valley, CA just to name a few.

Though distant stylistically, Karl developed a close relationship with the late Chris Whitley, who has inspired him immensely. Currently residing and performing in Washington, DC, Karl has completed six albums, three of which are available online through Apple iTunes, Amazon.com, eMusic.com, CD Baby, Rhapsody and others.
