Between 1996 and 200 the trio of fiddler and composer Mark O'Connor, double-bassist and composer Edgar Meyer, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma released two albums, Appalachian Waltz and Appalachian Journey.

Mark O'Connor (born August 5, 1961 in Seattle, Washington) is a widely known professional fiddler. As a teenager he won national championships on the guitar, mandolin as well as the fiddle.

Edgar Meyer (born November 24, 1960) is a prominent contemporary bassist. His styles include bluegrass, newgrass, jazz, and classical. Meyer has worked as a session musician in Nashville, part of various chamber groups, a composer, and an arranger.
