Modern Memory is an American indie rock band based in Los Angeles. Formed in 2001 by Ann Arbor brothers William and Wayne Faler after the demise of their seminal Michigan math rock band Philo Beddow. After moving to Los Angeles and trying out a number of bassists they teamed up with Los Angeles bass player Tambi Haron, former bassist in Los Angeles band, Bulletpark. Tambi brought along good friend Carlos De La Garza (also a former member of Bulletpark) on drums to complete the Modern Memory line up, although at this point they went by the name Grand.

OVERVIEW
After only four shows they started recording their debut record only to realize after mixing it that they were less then pleased with the results. After playing more shows opening for bands like, Hot Hot Heat, American Analog Set, Radio 4, her Space Holiday, the Microphones, Moving Units, Crystal Skulls, Headphones (Ex- Pedro the Lion) and even a side stage appearance at the legendary Flaming Lips and Beck collaboration/tour at the Universal Amphitheatre they decided to re-record their debut record. Carlos De La Garza was replaced by Jeremiah James on the drums just prior to recording due to the fact that Carlos had become increasingly busy running his recording studio Music Friends and producing bands like GoGoGo Airheart and Lyra. After recording the entire record live to tape at the Distillery in Costa Mesa with Mike McHugh in four days they flew to Seattle to mix it at Hall of Justice Studios with Chris Walla, guitarist of Death Cab for Cutie and also producer of bands like Hot Hot Heat, the Decemberists, Travis Morrison (ex- The Dismemberment Plan), Postal Service and of course Death Cab For Cutie. Unfortunately after returning to Los Angeles they reached the same conclusion that they once again were unhappy with the results. They all agreed that the recording was very rushed and that they had recently written some new songs that were much better then some of the material that was recorded for the record. So once again they scraped the recording and decided to re-record it a third time. At this point the band changed their name to Modern Memory in an attempt to get a fresh start. The third and final version of the record was recorded at Ocean studios, Mama Jo’s, Dokument and Music Friends by producer Jason Cupp (The Elected, Jason Falkner, The Valley Arena) and was mixed by William Faler and the rest of Modern Memory at Music Friends Studios. After three attempts the band was finally happy with the results and named the album Fraction of the First. Sticking with their DIY roots the band self-released the album and it’s currently available at local record stores like Amoeba Music and Sea Level Records and on their official website.

Modern Memory is currently in the process of writing their second full length album in between playing live shows.
