Black Hibiscus is the stage name of John “Jayjay” Ugbe, a Nigerian-born artist whose sound bridges indie‑soul, alt‑R&B, and psychedelic rock. Born in Lagos, he moved to Georgia at 13 and later settled in Brooklyn in 2023 .
Working solo under Black Hibiscus, Ugbe handles guitar, vocals, and production himself. He cites influences ranging from Nick Hakim and Blood Orange to JPEGMAFIA and Arca.
His debut full-length project, The End of the World, explores themes of love and loss, with interludes inspired by City of God characters and figures like Basquiat and Nina Simone.
