Introducing Rob Hirst & Dom Turner, the dirty, amped-up, fuzzed-out guitar/drum outfit who are the “Angry Tradesmen”. Their debut album, 'Beat the House', was made independently, with zero assistance from their friends in low places (except for James Cadsky's mighty mixing and William Bowden's magic mastering). The simple idea, spawned in the 90’s, has devolved into a monster. After an urgent frenzy of song-smithing and demo-ing, the Angry Tradesmen have arrived.
The sound? Tonal psychopaths playing the shelf-life out of a vintage drum kit and a bunch of Japanese and US made 60s electric guitars – thumping kick drum, soupy electric slide guitar, and chunky rock-riffs – all the while pumping out crunchy harmonies over the top.
The result? The Angry Tradesmen adopt the infamous WW1 strategy of Marshall Foch: when your front crumbles and your flanks collapse......ATTACK!
Thus the songs are propelled by Blueys's skuzzy raw guitar and Jobsworth’s rampaging right foot (always a fraction ahead of the beat). Initially controlled, 'Long Grass People' and 'Yeah Right' lure the listener with deceptive melody, before descending mid-tune into the bloody valley of the Orcs.
Of course, brute strength is never enough. There's deep-tissue soul searching here amongst the wreckage - just no socks, sandals or facial hair to muddy the message.
Here, then, are the Angry Tradesmen: master-built music with the toilet seat up; torrents of big-beat bile separated by tiny voids of excruciating silence.
Listen closely to their work, or they'll pull down your scaffolding.
