The story of Monophobic starts in 1991 when Toni Peltola was a young hip hop freak and anxious to make his own tracks. Inspired by Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill among others he started to make hip hop joints in Finnish. In 1991 he made three demotapes under the nickname Tonkku and sold over 300 copies of these underground pieces.

His interest in Jungle / Drum'n'Bass started to grow after hearing a Boogie Times Tribe track "The Dark Stranger" in 1993. Two years later, in 1995, Toni made another Hip Hop demo under the name MC Tony, this time in English. He soon discovered that the scene didn't give him anything new and all the wannabe gangstas in the scene were making him sick. At the time, Trip Hop, Jungle and Drum'n'Bass was rising and inspired Toni to move on with his music thus Monophobic was born.

Late 1997, he started experimenting beats and sounds, trying to create something between old Electro and modern Breakbeat with some faster Drum'n'Bass beats.
