Developing over many centuries on the high, isolated plateaus of their mountain-ringed land, the sublime, devotional chanting of these Tibetan Buddhist monks strives to transcend the everyday world of human folly, creating a work of faith, bliss and enlightenment through art. In 1987, Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart resolved to bring the Gyuto Monks to America and make them available to a wider audience. The sold-out, 22-city, 1988 tour culminated with a remarkable performance before 5,000 people at the New York's cathedral of St. John the Devine, which was filmed and later released as a feature on the Discovery Channel.
