There are two music artists with the same name:
1) An American hip-hop artist.
2) A Scottish folk artist.
1) One of the greatest successful stories in Houston hip-hop of all time, John Dew was born Andrew John DeWalt on September 1, 1982, in Houston, Texas.
He was the second of four children, growing up in a single parent home. John Dew’s father, Arturo DeWalt, left the family when John Dew was only 3 years old. The young rapper was raised by his mother, Linda Joseph, in the gang and drug-infested southwest side of Houston.
During a rough adolescence, that included going to 7 different schools as a child, John Dew learned to hustle boosted merchandise from electronics to clothing. He attended Elkins High School in Missouri City, Houston, where he honed his craft of rapping while creating one of the biggest independent Hip Hop promotional companies Houston has ever seen.
Dew turned to rap at a very young age as an escape from the drugs, violence and poverty that surrounded him on the south side of Houston. In 1997, he joined the rap group Mo-City Untouchables—to record their version of what was the then popular DJ Screw: Grey Tape Series. It was at this point that Andrew DeWalt embraced the nickname John Dew, which was simultaneously a homage to his family’s name, a play on Andrew’s middle name John and a reference to the first three letters of his last name. But even though he now had a stage name, John Dew remained relatively anonymous until he and two friends, Ryan Raeford and Bruce Jones, founded their own rap conglomerate, The Houston Elite M.C.’s (T.H.E.M.), in 2007. Dropping his first project with his then group The Council, Black Bleach had minimal success , then later releasing A Crew Project entitled, T.H.E.M. x Tipping Point Shoes Store Mixtape, which earned him a spot as one of Houston’s most definitive rappers. In June of 2009, John Dew released his debut solo album EP, Summertime Johnny. John Dew's most acclaimed album of his catalog, which would later be named on many music critics' lists as his best album to date.
2) John Dew is a composer and arranger whose work is informed by Scotland's musical traditions and folklore. His background in traditional music has influenced him to combine folk melodies and modes with classical idioms.
