Focusing on the genres of electronic music and modern rock, Indian Summer, refers to the season of the artist's birth juxtaposed with stories from Native American culture about a vital period of warmth that follows a killing frost. Each title in the song cycle is based on specific narratives from the life of the artist and the people he has met, yet also fictionalized to protect the identity of the song's primary subject.
