The Mariachi Ghost began in 2009 when founder Jorge Requena was asked to put together a band to play a blend of Spanish and English music for the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. The band called themselves The Mariachi Ghost, after a character in a graphic novel that Requena was writing at the time. The mixture of music, dance, and poetry was a hit with festival-goers, and soon the group realized that it had a potential greater than that of the graphic novel it was based on.

The Mariachi Ghost sound comes from a mixture of Mexican traditional folk music with progressive rock, spiced with acid jazz and choral arrangements.

The Mariachi Ghost plays shows that offer an unprecedented combination of rhythm, dance, and instrumentation. Up to ten dancers have joined them on stage, and their live shows often feature video elements, sugar skull face paint, and improvised jams.

The Mariachi Ghost is trilingual; members from English, Spanish, and French backgrounds make their music truly global.
