Luna Star grew up in Northern California and moved to Southern California as a teenager, where she started to write songs. She is influenced by Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith, We Are Scientists, and Interpol, although those influences rarely show in her work. Her songs are in the vein of indie-folk and alternative rock.
