The English Ron Sexsmith , a one man Athlete , Eels meets Billy Bragg , Badly Drawn Boy without the silly hat. Theyve all got a point really but Jason Baron live is pretty unique. He can wind a hip-hop beat into a song about the evils of coffee, and then sing a ballad worthy of Cole Porter.

Recently featured on the UK's leading indie commercial radio station XFM, Jason was short-listed for the BBC Radio 2's 'Sold on Song' songwriting competition, making the top 10 out of over 15,000 entries, and has just been asked to write another theme tune for BBC Radio 4 following on from his song 'Shut Eye' - the theme tune for the crime drama serial of the same name. He gigs all over London and a couple of years ago did a whirlwind tour of Ireland, supporting the mighty La Rocca.

In the last few years hes appeared at London venues such as the Borderline, the Barfly, and the 12 Bar Club, but has been involved in music for a lot longer than that. He writes music for television and film everything from the Channel Five docu-soaps to art-house cinema, and has performed songs on TV as part of the comedy trio the Baron Brothers. Jason evolved into Donovan Pervert, the filth-singing folkie.

Typically though, it all starts even further back than this, and years ago Jason wrote, played and sang for The Tennessee Daniels, a five piece skiffle outfit, seen in the seedier venues of Newcastle's underground music scene. Jason had drifted north to Newcastle from the Lincolnshire town of Louth where he was born. A strange town now home to more than its fair share of luminaries. Robert Wyatt and John Shuttleworth can be seen down one aisle of the Co-Op, Barbara Dickson and Roy Chubby Brown down the next. Such north/south travelling has sprung forth songs of uproot and wonder, stories of folks not quite sure that where they are, is actually where they want to be. And songs about sex in swimming pools. And dancing to Northern Soul.

Jason Baron's Coffee is a Lie E.P. is available now, and includes 3 tracks: Coffee is a Lie and Radio Station were recorded, mixed and mastered at Sound Joint studios, and the other track Almost Sometimes is a more stripped down affair, recorded in a bedroom in Streatham.
