Beijing composer and classical flute recitalist Bruce Gremo also performs on bass flute, alto shakulute, Japanese Shakuhachi, glissando flute, Indian Bansuri, and Chinese Xun. He is also principle flutist in the Peking Sinfonietta. He composes pitch-tracking intensive computer applications, and for the Cilia, his patented flute-controller instrument. He develops concert formats where contrary performance practices meet and contend; classical repertoire and improvisation, computer interaction and acoustic, western and eastern, old and new, functional and ecstatic. His education is a mix of graduate composition study, improvisation in various NYC music scenes from the 1980s and 90s, 8 years in a graduate philosophy department, work in the theater and with dance, and practice as a working classical and studio musician. He has been a soloist at Lincoln Center Festival, Wien Modern, the BBC Proms Festival at the Royal Albert Hall, the Knitting Factory Jazz Festival under Ornette Coleman’s direction, and the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival with Butch Morris, to name a few.
