The Simpletones, a California group whose releases first appeared on Posh Boy Records beginning in 1978 and with recordings contained in compilations released on other labels in multiple countries. They are, perhaps, best known as one of the 3 groups contained on the 1979 seminal compilation album Beach Blvd., the other 2 groups being Rik L Rik (Negative Trend, and F-Word) and The Crowd.

In the book "We Got The Neutron Bomb "The Untold Story of L.A. Punk", Robbie Fields outlines his journey "scouring for younger, fresher talent" in the suburbs of Los Angeles. This pilgrimage ultimately led to signing the Simpletones, and the release of the aforementioned Beach Blvd.

In Bryce McQuern's profile of the Posh Boy label published 28 June 2007 in the Knoxville Voice, he wrote :

"L.A. scene-sters the Simpletones most significantly influenced West Coast pop-punk. Their Rodney entry is a loop-de-loop
of pop dynamism and hooks called "TV Love," with inane lyrics about the inanity of television idolatry; for all its
pitfalls, it's probably the high point of Rodney 1's second side. Their three singers never synthesize into three-part
harmony bliss, but they do commit some catchy insider sniping at punk reactionaries, hangers-on, discos and victims of
social diseases. "I Like Drugs" and "Tiger Beat Twist" are crude punk anthems from the semi-democratic group, and "I Have
a Date" and "Kristy Q" ascend to the canon of punk love, nearly becoming standards after the Vandals paid tribute with
their own versions."

One of the group's songs "I Have A Date" written by Jay Lansford has been re-recorded by The Vandals released on Kung Fu Records, featured in a Warner Bros. film "Trojan War", another song "California" (Jay Lansford) by the cast of the TV show "The O.C.". Members of the Simpletones went on to become members of a myriad of commercially released groups, released on both major and indie labels, including Channel 3, Stepmothers,The Unforgiven and Gigantor. A later member of The Simpletones was top session drummer Josh Freese.
