Whether you want to call it “destiny” or “fate” or “a calling”, the real fact is that some people are born to sing and create music. Chances are you’ll get a vibration on the idea that music is and always has become the artist’s most natural expressions.
Music has been the central theme in the life of “Geoffrey Star” (born Geoffrey Forrest on December 2,1975) for as long as he can remember and now, some fifteen-odd years later, this multi-talented singer, songwriter, arranger, music engineer and producer is fulfilling his childhood dreams and ambitions.
It was in 1997, when he got his first single, a cover version of air Supply’s “ALL OUT OF LOVE”, produced by David Madden, which introduced him to the recording buying market. This would lead him to a formal introduction to Christopher “Grammy” Meredith, bass player for Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. More opportunities came for Geoffrey when he started to do engineering. He recorded some of Jamaica’s most popular reggae artist such as Dennis Brown, John Holt, Bunny Wailer and Bunny Ruggs to name a few. Since then he met singer, songwriter, musician and producer Michael “Mikey Spice” Johnson, and did songs like: “I DON’T KNOW” and “I’VE GOT HEAVEN” on the Ingredience label. These songs showcased his melodious sound and attest to his writing ability. His versatility is exemplified with his combination with Shabba Ranks, “CONSIGNMENT” remix and Jahmel in “MASTERBUILDER”.
Counting Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Beres Hammond and Michael Jackson among his primary influences (along with a slew of R&B artists like Al Green, Marvin Gaye, The O’Jays, John Legend and Ne-Yo). Geoffrey has combined his creativity and inspirations into a stunning new sound all his own. You can hear it on tracks like “IM SORRY” and “PICTURE ME AND YOU” on Don Corleon’s DROP LEAF & SEASON’S Rhythm), which is getting good airplay.
Family roots are very important to Geoffrey and he recalls growing up in a musical household: his father is “Ranchie” McLean, former original bass player with “The Revolutionaries” and “Skin, Flesh and Bones”, alongside the renowned drummer Sly Dunbar. Geoffrey found himself making a number of guest appearances on different projects. He did harmonies both in studio and on stage for popular reggae artiste like: Bunny Wailer, Marcia Griffiths, Mikey Spice, Burning Spear, Glen Washington and Bunny Ruggs of Third World.
With a few competitions under his belt Geoffrey was a finalist in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s annual Festival song competition in 1998, he also made it to the finals in the Caribbean Music Expo (CME) 2002. In the summer he toured Europe with Mighty Diamonds, Wayne Wonder, Fred Locks and Lady Saw; it was whilst on tour that he was afforded the opportunity to meet with Brinzley Forde from the British Reggae Group “Aswad” and together they collaborated on the single entitled “ARE YOU THINKING WHT I’M THINKING”, this track was produced by the son of Brinzley Forde, Germaine Forde. With the wealth of knowledge and experiences garnered over the years, Geoffrey Star is assiduously working to creat his debut album.
