There are two artists called David Newland.
David Newland (Canadian) is a Canadian singer-songwriter born in Ottawa in 1969, and raised on the shores of Georgian Bay near Parry Sound, Ontario. His earliest influences were water and the woods, books and the radio, trains and the highway. He lived a "classic Canadian rural life" until the age of seventeen, when he began a series of globe-trotting adventures.
He began his singing career as guitar-playing busker in the streets of Montreal and Halifax in the early 90's, playing folk and pop classics. He has gone on to compose hundreds of songs, loosely in the in the folk-roots tradition, but drawing on influences from a variety of genres, including rock, pop, country, blues, punk and more. Newland's work tends to be centred on lyrics and is frequently story-driven. Many of his songs have been recorded in intimate live venues such as church halls and cafes.
Although he has typically performed as a solo artist, David is the founder of The McFlies, an acoustic eighties cover band, and occasionally performs with a variety of sidemen under the name The Warehouse Workers.
David Newland wrote the song "Riding on the Railway," best-known as the theme for the CTV documentary "Canada's Greatest Ride." A number of his songs have been covered by fellow Canadian songwriter Aengus Finnan.
David Newland has released two independent albums: Evergreen, (2003) recorded live in East Margaretsville, Nova Scotia, and Roll Away, (2005) recorded live in several locations across Canada.
His first studio CD, Give It A Whirl (2012), earned excellent reviews and airplay on folk and roots radio shows across the country. The CD features the talents of John Sheard, George Koller, Dala, and members of Quartette, The Good Lovelies, and Bebop Cowboys.
A rhythm guitarist for most of his performing career, David Newland has earned a strong following as a ukulele player and instructor. He credits the ukulele with changing his songwriting style; recent works tend to be lighter in approach and are more influenced by swing, lounge, and standards than his previous work.
