Roop Verma is a world-renowned Indian musician; a master of the healing sounds of the Indian Sitar, a brilliant concert performer, teacher, and composer. He tours internationally giving concerts, teaching music, and conducting healing music and meditation seminars. He has recorded numerous CDs, tapes, and LPs of traditional North Indian music and chanting, as well as recordings for meditation, healing & deep relaxation.

Roop was born in northern India and is a product of the Indian classical and sacred music systems; he formally studied with maestros J.P. Kaushik, Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar. He has developed a deep, pure, spirit-guided expression of sound, which has reached out to the hearts and souls of thousands of people.

As an inspiring music teacher, he presents the authentic and traditional North Indian Classical Music, both in theory and practice. Additionally, he teaches the application of the science, principles and techniques of Indian classical music to Western instruments and voice, for all ranges of music students from beginner to professional.

He has composed more than 2000 works, and is frequently exploring new possibilities with both small and large groups of Eastern and Western musicians. His most recent works include "Concerto for Sitar and Orchestra" and original music for the documentary film "Dalai Lama Renaissance". He creates new forms, which are derived from Indian classical music, and are adaptable to all classes of world musical instruments.

Roop Verma, an active practitioner and teacher of Nada Yoga, represents the age-old tradition of meditation as taught by his teachers, Swami Shyam of the Himalayas and Sri Brahmananda Sarasvati, both of whom he studied with for over 30 years. Meditation in essence is a step by step process for restoring 'balance' and harmony to the whole person as Nature intended us to be. A balance of body, mind and spirit is essential to enjoy the fullness of life.

Biography

ROOP VERMA is an internationally respected sitarist, composer and an accomplished teacher of Indian Classical and Sacred music. He was born in a music-loving family of North India and grew up in an environment rich with art and culture. He received his M.A. in music from Gandharva Maha Vidyalya University in Pune, India and was formally trained under Maestros J.P. Kaushik, Ali Akbar Khan, and Ravi Shankar. Deeper dimensions and the spiritual quality of his music evolved from years of study with his teachers, Swami Shyam of the Himalayas and Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati (Ramamurti S. Mishra, M.D.).

During the growing years, his intense curiosity led him to search for inner dimensions in everything he did - painting, literature, science, soccer, yoga, meditation--and above all, music. His main inclination was towards the deeper aspects of music and its relationship with life. As a young apprentice, Roop Verma split apart every tune he learned and played, only to discover the "infinity" of emotional and spiritual experiences. These experiences became the core of his music through years of self-analysis and inner search.

He has lectured and taught at major universities on three continents and has played high profile concerts in the most prestigious concert halls of Europe, North and South America and India.

He was the featured artist and composer of a special work for the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland in 1995 and, as an honored guest of the Government of Belgium, at the Anderlecht Cultural Center in Brussels. His memorable 1997 concert at Berwaldhallen, Stockholm, Sweden was produced by Swedish National Radio and Television, and is one of many recordings of his music.

His “Concerto for Sitar and Orchestra” was premiered in November 2006 at Merkin Hall in New York at the 2nd Festival of Universal Sacred Music, receiving an overwhelming response and applause from those who treasure music as the very source of life. The Concerto had its European premiere by the Linkoping Symphony Orchestra in Sweden in September 2007.

He has composed original music for the documentary film "Dalai Lama Renaissance", currently showing and winning awards at film festivals around the world. It is scheduled to be released soon. He is the recipient of the prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities Award for 2006 as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Hartwick College, Oneonta, New York. Roop is the director of The East-West School of Music in Monroe, New York.

He is considered as one of the pioneers of neo-impressionism in music and has established his place in the most competitive world of music. The magic of his music is being appreciated worldwide with a totally different mechanism of expression - the human awareness. He lives a simple life and portrays that simplicity in his music where there is no competition, ego or gimmicks – only the pure music, peace and healing it offers to every heart and soul.
