Born in Porto Alegre in southern Brazil, Iara Behs copleted her piano studies there, before continuing her studies at the State Academy for Music in Karlsruhe (Germany), from 1989 onwards. She participated in master-clases and music festivals in both Europe and South America togheter with pianists such as Bruno Canino, Roberto Szidon, Lev Vlasenko, Dinorah Varsi and others.
She won first prize in the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra's Competition for Young Soloist and was named the "best interpreter of Brazilian music" in a piano competition held by the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul.
She has also made recordings for radio and appeared on television.
