Somewhere in the boring corners of April 2003, Erica Petersen and Todd Hanton decided to embark into a musical fusion. This fusion was ignited by Erica’s desire to put flesh on the skeletons of her songs. After doodling on some of her material during a Son, Ambulance practice (a band Erica plays bass for), her colleagues gave her the encouragement she needed to form a band. Erica and Todd recruited percussionist Corey Broman (also of Son, Ambulance) to jam with them, and unknowingly the threesome began forging the ground that is now Kite Pilot.

Their first performance was a house show in the summer of 2003 in midtown Omaha, NE. Although it was rough around the edges, the word-of-mouth gospel about the originality and sincerity of the band began spreading around the micro-scene of Omaha. Two months later, the band found themselves filling in for an absent Tilly and the Wall at Omaha’s best club, Sokol underground. This was Kite Pilot’s first exposure to Omaha proper. Just for this show, Kite Pilot asked multi-instrumentalist Austin Britton (who also plays in a band called Little Brazil) to play bass and provide a much needed low end to their sound.

After a successful show as a four-piece, Kite Pilot has remained as such. With a home recorded EP that has caught everyone by surprise, Kite Pilot is casually winning the oversaturated ears of burned out music fans, playing some of the most enjoyable live shows in Omaha, and will hopefully bring that charm to a much broader audience in the future.
